Placement Testing

The Placement Test is used to determine how equipped a student is for enrollment in college courses. The test covers three areas: reading, writing/grammar, and mathematics/algebra. A minimum score must be made in order to be admitted to CTC. Testing is required for all CTC programs. Each program has a set of scores that must be made to be eligible to take program math and English courses. Failure to reach those program scores will result in a student being required to take additional courses called Learning Support courses. These are courses that are in addition to the program required courses.

General Reminders

CTC does not allow outside calculators to be used during placement testing. The computer/test does provide students with a calculator. Bring a picture ID for entrance into the test Allow 2-3 hours to complete the test, longer during peak times. Do NOT bring cell phones or children with you to the test. Placement testing is not offered in between terms, specifically from one week after the document deadline through the end of the  drop/add period. Under most circumstances the college uses the COMPASS test for placement. For sample questions, go to http://act.org/compass/sample/index.html or http://www.act.org/compass/student/index.html, or do an internet search for other available study guides.

Retesting

If students wish to take the test again in an effort to improve their scores, students must wait at least one day and pay the $15 retesting fee. If students do not meet the minimum score to be admitted, they must retest in the deficient areas. Retesting is available through student affairs for new students.

POST Testing

POST testing is offered at five of our campus locations: North Metro, Paulding, Appalachian, Mountain View, and Canton. POST testers take the COMPASS test, which covers reading, writing, pre-algebra, and algebra. There is a $15 fee to take the COMPASS Test for POST. Testers must fill out the Testing Registration Form in the Student Affairs office. Test scores are available immediately upon finishing the test and will be provided in a sealed envelope, if necessary. Please see below for testing times and directions.
