English as a Second Language

Info Page Header Graphic

For immigrants with limited English proficiency, the Adult Education Program offers basic to intermediate English as a Second Language (ESL) classes which are designed to help the adult learner comprehend and communicate in written and spoken English for a variety of purposes and audiences, to express basic personal needs, and compose passages on familiar, personally relevant topics, using vocabulary related to the functions of everyday life. ESL classes are offered at the Canton, Cartersville, North Metro, Marietta, and Paulding campuses.

The Adult Education Program also offers English Literacy classes to assist immigrants with intermediate or higher English proficiency in acquiring the basic skills necessary to navigate governmental, educational, workplace, banking, healthcare, and other key American institutions. These classes incorporate instruction on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, naturalization procedures, civic participation, and United States history and government. With the use of effective instructional practices, aspiring and recently sworn citizens will gain the skills and knowledge to become active and informed parents, workers, and community members. English Literacy classes are offered at the Canton, Marietta, North Metro, Paulding, and Virtual campuses.

There is no charge for these classes; however, an admission assessment is required to determine a student’s placement. Prospective students should contact the nearest learning center to set up an appointment for an assessment. In accordance with Georgia law (O.C.G.A. § 50-36-1), applicants who are ages 18 and over must provide a secure and verifiable document and execute a signed and sworn affidavit verifying his or her lawful presence in the United States in order to be eligible to receive the public benefit of adult education.
