Emergency Preparedness

Emergencies on Campus

If an emergency or critical event does take place on any Chattahoochee Tech Campus, always listen to the directions of college officials and Chattahoochee Tech Public Safety. Your safety is our priority. We need your cooperation at all times. For any life-threatening emergency or to report criminal or suspicious activity, call Public Safety at 770-529-2311.

For your convenience, we have prepared an at-a-glance Emergency Preparedness Guide. Please take a moment to review it.

Emergency Procedures for Evacuation of Buildings

To ensure that Chattahoochee Tech staff and students can be quickly evacuated in case of a fire, or some other emergency situation that would require leaving the building, an evacuation route plan is posted in work areas, classrooms, offices, and laboratories. All staff members should be familiar with the fire exit routes, fire alarm and fire extinguisher locations, and weather emergency procedures.

Please Note: It is the instructor’s responsibility to respond to a fire or tornado alarm. By following the procedures in the Emergency Guideline and Procedures Manual, and the Quick Reference Guide posted in classrooms. Special attention should be given to those students with disabilities, thus ensuring their safe egress from the building. Students with disabilities should be previously identified by the instructor so appropriate help can be given in case of an emergency.

Tornadoes

A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes. A tornado warning means a tornado has actually been sighted in the area. In case of a tornado:

  • Go to the basement or the lowest floor possible.
  • Avoid windows and doors; interior hallways and walls are safer.
  • Avoid auditoriums, gymnasiums or other structures with wide free-span roofs.
  • Take shelter underneath your desk or any heavy piece of furniture.
  • Curl up to protect your head and eyes.
  • Follow the direction of Chattahoochee Tech Dept. of Public Safety Officers.
  • Always wait for the “All Clear” to be given before resuming normal activities.

Staff and Faculty will ensure that everyone follows all instructions during emergency drills as well as in actual emergencies.

Fire Safety Prevention
  • Know where fire alarms and portable extinguishers are located on your campus.
  • Know what immediate hazards might cause a fire or become dangerous in a fire (e.g., blocked corridors, chemical storage and propped open doors as well as smoke in stairways).
  • Know who to call and keep the number near the phone.
  • Know where exits are located.
In case of fire:
  • In case of fire, an alarm will sound and wall strobes will flash.
  • All employees and students should assemble quickly in their designated staging areas at least 1,000 feet from the building.
  • All interior doors should be closed.

DO NOT RE-ENTER THE BUILDING UNTIL THE PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT HAS GIVEN THE “ALL CLEAR

Emergency Exit Signs are posted in classrooms and throughout the building.

Staff and Faculty will ensure that everyone follows all instructions during emergency drills as well as in actual emergencies.

Chemical spills

Don’t try to clean up a chemical spill unless you know the chemical(s) involved, the needed protective environment and materials and how to proceed without endangering yourself or others.

If a spill occurs:

  • Give first aid and immediately phone for medical help for injured persons.
  • Confine the spill by spreading absorbent material around the spill area.
  • If flammable liquids are spilled, extinguish all sources of ignition (such as Bunsen burners) and do not turn on any electrical switches (such as lights) or equipment.
  • Evacuate the area and do not allow others to enter.
  • Call your local Environmental Safety Services and the Dept. of Public Safety at your campus to report the problem.
  • Always wait for the “All Clear” to be given before re-entering the area and resuming normal activities.
Bomb Threats

Bomb threats usually come by telephone. If you receive such a call, remain calm and collected. Don’t panic. Try to obtain as much information as possible from the caller. Ask the following:

  • When will the bomb explode?
  • What kind of bomb is it? What will cause it to explode?
  • Why did you select this place for it?
  • What does it look like?
  • Did you place the bomb? Who did? Why?
  • Where is it right now?
  • What is your address? Your phone number? Your name?
  • Notify your campus Public Safety officers at 770-529-2311 immediately to give them the information, describing the caller’s voice, any background noises and the exact wording of the message.
  • Notify an official or person in charge of the building you are in.
  • Never touch suspicious packages. Inform Public Safety and follow all directions on how to proceed.
  • Always wait for the “All Clear” to be given before re-entering the area and resuming normal activities.
Preventing theft on campus
  • Close and lock all office doors when you exit that room or area.
  • Keep cash, checks, credit cards and books with you at all times; do not leave them in an open or unattended area.
  • Write your name and an I.D. number, in pen, inside your books or belongings if you can.
  • Store computers, lab equipment and audiovisual equipment, when not in use, in a locked office or classroom. Preventing theft is everyone’s responsibility.
