Selecting a major and/or a career is no easy task and often takes time to fully explore all of the options available and how they relate to your interests, personality, skills and values. Explore our tools and resources that will be instrumental in helping you decide on your best fit major and career.

EXPLORE

Focus2 Career Assessment – is a career and education planning system that offers insight on work interests, personality, skills, values, and leisure activities. The assessments lead to self-discovery to make the decision-making process easier.

Interest Assessment – The O*Net Interest Profiler can help you find out what your interests are and how they relate to the world of work. You can find out what you like to do.

My Skills (O*Net) – This skills search function is designed to help you use your skill set to identify occupations for exploration.

Jung Typology Test – is a series of analytical questions that will aid you in your career search.

INVESTIGATE

CTC Major ExplorationWhat to do with a major in…? – This website helps to connect your major with typical career paths associated with that area of study.

CTC Majors and Curriculums – List of current programs of study at CTC including the courses for each

Discover You: Career Guide - Snapshot of the programs of study including the state and/or national outlook

My Next Move – Explore careers by keywords, industries or take a mini assessment.

O*Net Online – Career exploration and job analysis

Career OneStop Shop – Choose occupation information to browse occupation profiles, employment trends and salary information by state.

Informational Interviews: A great way to research a career by interviewing a person already employed in that field. Informational interviews allow you to obtain information about the career field, learn about the skills and educational experiences you will need to enter the field, and connect with people already employed in the field.

Individual Counseling: Make an appointment with a career advisor to discuss your options. They can guide you through a journey of discovering your interests, likes, goals, and preferences and discuss with you how these influence your major.

After completing self-assessment exercises and investigating possible options, you may be ready to make a decision about your major.

Engage in your major.

If you already know what you’d like to major in, it is time to get started on connecting to your major. Creating an academic plan means identifying both a selection of courses to complete major as well as identifying areas of co-curricular interest and growth.
