Chattahoochee Tech Finishes Sixth in National PLANET Competition

(Acworth, Ga. – March 26, 2014) Chattahoochee Technical College Horticulture and Environmental Technology students, instructors and staff members celebrated Sunday in Fort Collins, Colo. as it was announced that the team had placed sixth in the annual competition portion of PLANET Student Career Days behind first place finishers Brigham Young University – Provo. Chattahoochee Technical College was one of only two Georgia colleges or universities to crack the top ten this year and one of the highest finishing two-year colleges at the event.

This marked the 22nd year that the college’s team has finished in the top ten in the nation, including a first place finish overall in 2008 and 2010. Led by instructors John Hatfield and Bejie Herrin, the team competed against approximately 800 students from 65 two-year and four-year colleges and universities in 28 events related to horticulture and landscape. Comprised of students from both Horticulture and Environmental Technology, the CTC team was smaller than in recent years with 16 students, most of whom competed in multiple events.

Chattahoochee Technical College’s team scored a combined 3850.19 points, about 32 points ahead of seventh place finishers, Colorado State University. Along with the school’s sixth place award, the team had 15 individual and small team finish in the top ten, including three first place finishers.
