(Acworth, Ga. – July 30, 2013) Faculty, students and graduates of Chattahoochee Technical College’s Cosmetology Program will be donating their time and skills at this year’s Bartow County Give a Kid a Chance event. Scheduled for Saturday, August 3, the event includes hundreds of volunteers who provided more than 1,400 children in need dental, hearing, and vision screenings, along with haircuts, backpacks, school supplies, a pair of pants, and a shirt.
“This is my fifth year participating,” said Chattahoochee Technical College Cosmetology Instructor Colette Arp. “There are between 1,000 and 2,000 children who attend.”
According to Arp, she and another faculty member will join current students and graduates who are licensed hairdressers now. They will provide haircuts to participating Bartow County students. The program is designed for students who might not otherwise have access to these screenings or materials. Students eligible for the program often receive free or reduced lunch and are notified through the Summer Feeding Program or other school programs. While the program is being offered at several locations in Bartow County, Chattahoochee Technical College will be participating in the Cartersville Civic Center event.
The diploma level Cosmetology program is available at the Appalachian, Marietta and North Metro campuses. The curriculum allows students to learn how to cut, color and style all types of hair. They are taught the fundamentals of chemical texture services, professional skin care, and advanced techniques of attractive and sanitary nail care. Chattahoochee Technical College maintains two, open-to-the-public, cosmetology salons at the Marietta and North Metro campuses.
